Gilded

"Gilded" means covered in gold, wealth, and to disguise. Taking from my own experiences as a fashion enthusiast, fashion can be both a positive way to express creativity as well as a way to cover up or portray a desired image. In a way, the clothes and accessories we wear can serve as a mask. There is often a stereotype that fashion lovers or people working in the fashion industry are shallow, cold, and catty. I played with this idea of vanity with the mirror in my photography, as mirrors represent egotism in Byzantine, Gothic, and Early Renaissance paintings. It is very easy to be self-absorbed right now, with all of the use of social media as a way for people to seek validation from others. Social media has also served as a way for many people to hide their true identity. Since fashion consists of constantly changing trends, I chose rose gold as the color of the mask as well as the tulle since it is a current color trend. The top of the mask tulle is inspired by British fascinator hats, since they are fun and consist of an interesting texture coming off of the top of the hat. The shape of the mask is simple besides the tulle so that the rose gold color and tulle are the main components. The outfit on the model is a representation of trendy clothes to pair with the mask. The poses are sassy but still stiff and unsure to speak to the fear of completely showing true identity. The model is looking in the mirror, not sure how much of her true self she can see.
